Stress Fracture of the Tibia

Shin pain in runners (Part III)

To continue our series on shin pain in runners, an important diagnosis is shin pain caused by a stress fracture. Clues to this condition are symptoms of sharp pain at a localized area overlying the shin bone, near the junction of the middle and distal thirds. Typically pain is constant, and worse with the foot landing on the ground.

Compartment Syndrome

Shin pain in runners (Part II)

This post is a follow up to my previous blog on shin pain in runners. Another cause of shin pain after or during running is due to a condition known as Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome (CECS).

This syndrome is due to increased pressure within a closed space where the muscles attempt to expand but are unable to do so. As a result of this, a runner experiences pain only when running. There should be no pain at rest and pain when running should resolve within several minutes of rest.

Meniscus Injuries

Meniscus Injuries

What are menisci in the knee? These are a pair of complex tissue located between the thigh bone (femur) and the shin bone (tibia). This tissue is shaped like a letter “C”, and their purpose is to reduce the compressive load that the cartilage must endure.

In young people, sports (such as basketball, football, soccer and skiing ) are the most common cause of meniscal injuries.

Symptoms of injury include:

  • locking of the knee
  • swelling
  • pain along the joint line

Prescription Opioid Risks

Here is a sobering statistic: Prescription opioids played a role in more than 16,235 deaths in the USA in 2013.

Notice there are a few key points in that statement.

1. Opioids – What are “opioids”?  These include drugs such as oxycodone/Roxicodone, Percocet, Vicodin/hydrocodone, Opana, Morphine, Dilaudid, Demerol, and Fentanyl.

2. Prescription – that means that a doctor wrote a prescription for someone, so these data are not to be lumped together with illegal opioids such as heroin.

Sometimes medicines intended for a patient are stolen, and sometimes medications intended for aid become an addiction, but nevertheless, the important point is that we are talking about medications which are legal.

3. 16,000 deaths.

Buttock Pain

Do you have buttock pain?

A common frustrating condition for patients is pain in the buttock region, which has several common and some less common causes. More common causes would be pain referred from the low back called the lumbar spine. Many people believe any pain radiating to the buttock is from a herniated disc, but that is not always the case.
