Surprising Causes of Low Back Pain

Most people will experience some type of low back pain in their lifetimes in fact, we just wrote a blog post about the “Do’s and Don’ts of Back Pain” a few weeks ago. Did you know that some of your everyday habits could be contributing to your pain? Here are some surprising causes of low back pain.

A poor diet

Maintaining a healthy weight is a great way to keep your body healthy. Extra weight can cause strain on the back and joints, which leads to pain.

Lack of exercise

Not staying active can cause weight gain and back pain symptoms. Exercise helps give you the muscle tone needed to support your back and keep it pain-free.

Poor posture

I’m sure you’ve been told to “sit up straight” a time or two. Proper posture is key to keeping away back pain. Your ears should be over your shoulders, your shoulders over your hips, and your hips over your ankles.

Wrong office chair

Sitting in the wrong type of office chair can certainly cause you back pain. The body is meant to move. Take short breaks and get up and walk around.

Worn out shoes

If your shoes are old, get rid of them. Don’t wear shoes that hurt, ladies I’m talking to you! There’s a correct shoe for everyone. Someone with a high arch will feel better with a heel rather than a flat shoe, while someone with a flat foot will feel better wearing a flat shoe rather than a heel. Get what works best for you.

Old mattress

If you wake up day after day with a sore back or neck, it may be time to invest in a new mattress.

Unsupportive bra

Carrying more weight in front because of large breasts can be a back pain cause. Get a properly fitting bra by getting measured at your local undergarment store.

Cigarettes

Smoking not only damages your heart and lungs but it also deprives your body of oxygen, including the cells that control the motion of your back. Studies have shown that smokers are more than likely to develop lower back pain than those who have never smoked.
