NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies)
At NorthEast Spine and Sports we offer NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies) that measures the speed and intensity of the electrical signals that travel along the nerves. It also tests reaction time for a response and can help a doctor determine nerve problems in a patient.
Preparing for NCS
Several weeks prior to the test, a doctor should be notified of any medications a patient is on. Some medications can affect the nervous system and thus the results of the test. A doctor may recommend the patient refrains from taking certain medications a few days before the test. Patients should also refrain from having caffeinated beverages and smoking three hours prior. The use of lotions and oils on test day is not recommended.
What to Expect During the Procedure
During the NCS, patients are typically asked to lay down. Electrodes are attached to the area that’s being tested and signals are sent through the electrodes. The signals measure response times. The NCV test is typically painless but patients may feel a tingly sensation or experience some twitching.
We offer this test in each of our offices in Jackson, Point Pleasant, Barnegat, Manchester, Aberdeen, Tinton Falls and Lakewood.
