A trigger point is an area of muscle that has superfluous soreness and sensitivity. It might feel like a “knot” in your muscles. That knot is actually the connective tissues in your muscle which have become injured through trauma or repetitive use. They often radiate to other nearby areas on the body and cause pain. This is referred to as myofascial pain. For example, a trigger point near your elbow may actually cause you pain down the length of your forearm, wrist, and thumb, and a trigger point near the spinal column could radiate pain down your entire back. There are many trigger points throughout the body that can cause your muscles to feel stiff or tender; they might even limit your range of motion, which can affect the daily activities you perform while you’re home or at work in Glassboro, NJ, or Lakewood, NJ.
When swells of pain occur, it’s common for a trigger point injection to be necessary. A trigger point injection is a shot of local anesthetic and steroid inserted into an extremely tender area. The injection is usually given multiple times until relief of the painful areas occurs.
Trigger points become prominent when muscles become overactive or over-extended due to stress, physical activity, or spinal problems. When treatments such as stress reduction and proper exercise cannot relieve the pain, a trigger point injection could help.
How the Process Works:
The skin is marked at the injection site before a fine needle is inserted through the skin into the trigger point area. Sometimes a patient may feel a small twitch in the area of affliction. The twitch is good because it means the needle is in the correct area.
Numbing medicine is administered, and then the treatment is given by moving the needle around the entire trigger point, covering the entire area. The procedure typically only takes a few minutes, allowing for quick and convenient treatment for patients with busy schedules. After the injection is completed, a bandage is then placed over the injection site to stop bleeding.
