Spinal Cord Stimulator Trials
When all other forms of pain management treatment have not worked, a spinal cord stimulator trial may be the solution for treating chronic pain in patients who have severe neuropathic pain. A spinal cord stimulator trial is a procedure that helps obtain a diagnosis by checking the spinal cord and spinal nerves with tiny electrical impulses. Prior to any procedure, evaluation is required to determine if this procedure is the best option.
Preparing for a Spinal Cord Stimulator Trial
Prior to a spinal cord stimulator trial, patients may need to refrain from taking certain medicines. They should also not each or drink anything six hours prior. It’s important to have transportation available after the procedure, as driving is not recommended.
What to Expect During the Procedure
During the scs implant procedure, patients are fully awake so that they can describe what they are feeling to doctors. They lay on their back and a needle is inserted into their back. Additionally, one or more leads will be implanted and connected to a trial cord stimulator, customized to cover pain areas.
Procedures typically take two to three hours. This is an outpatient procedure but in some instances, patients may need to be kept overnight for observation.
We often get asked if the procedure will hurt. There is some discomfort but a mild sedative will be given to help.
