What is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy, also known as peripheral neuropathy, polyneuropathy (affecting more than one nerve) and also simply as nerve pain, is a complication found in a number of different underlying medical conditions, commonly diabetes. Over 25 million people in the United States have diabetes and over 60% of those diagnosed have neuropathy. Neuropathy is nerve damage in the peripheral nervous system so it affects nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. The three main types of nerves that can be involved in peripheral neuropathy are:
- Autonomic nerves (Nerves not under conscious control, involuntary”
- Motor nerves
- Sensory nerves
Autonomic nerves regulate automatic functions of the body, for example—heart rate, blood pressure, and sweating. Motor nerves control the muscles of the body and sensory nerves pass sensations from a part of a body to the brain including information about cold, heat, and pain. While we are thankful to have these nerves to alert us to pain, heat, cold, etc., we do not want nerve damage cause discomfort or suffering. The symptoms of neuropathy are most commonly described as tingling, burning sensation, or a loss of sensation similar to what it would feel like to be wearing a thin stocking or glove. Some other symptoms can include:
- Gradual onset of numbness and tingling in the feet or hands that can spread to the legs and arms
- Burning pain
- Sharp, japing or electric-like pain
- Extreme sensitivity to touch
- Skin, hair or nail changes
- Lack of coordination
- Muscle weakness or paralysis
- Bowel, bladder or digestive problems
What is MicroVas Therapy?
MicroVas therapy was developed originally by the U.S. Military to treat hypothermia in Navy SEALS. MicroVas is a non-invasive, pain-free therapy that uses electronic impulses to cause muscle contraction and relaxation cycles which stimulate circulation. Increased blood flow raises the oxygen level in the tissues to promote healing in the nerves, and muscles, which have been damaged. The therapeutic effects are dramatic and long lasting. It is considered an important new tool in the treatment of neuropathy, non-healing wounds, repetitive motion disorders, fibromyalgia, common sports injuries, and many other conditions related to vascular insufficiency. Treatment is compatible with conventional care and can be used as a broad application for pain and healing.
What to Expect During Therapy
You will the pulses of the MicroVas therapy and your body will begin to relax. MicroVas therapy lasts for approximately 45 minutes and is usually recommended as a 36 treatment regimens.
